Scarborough is situated on the southernmost coast in Cumberland County. This coastal resort area is located seven miles south of Portland and is a part of the Portland-South Portland-Biddeford, Maine metropolitan statistical area.
The estimated population was 18,919 based on the 2010 census and the town has a total area of 70.63 square miles. Land mass only covers 47.61 square miles of the town, leaving 23.02 square miles of waterways. Its highest point is Scottow Hill, with an elevation of 144 feet.
The town of Scarborough is crisscrossed by U.S. Route 1, and State Routes 9, 77, 114, and 207 as well as Interstate 295, and Interstate 95. South Portland and Westbrook borders the town to the North and North West while Cape Elizabeth shares its border to the North East. Sacco and Old Orchard Beach borders it to the South and Southwest and Gorman Buxton borders it to the West.
The town has its own public school system. There are three primary schools, a middle school an intermediate school and a high school. Residents enjoy convenient shopping within their boundaries are also close to major shopping centers in the Cumberland County area.
Homeownership is fairly high in Scarborough (66.3 percent) while renters comprise 33.7 percent of the population. These single-family home dominates the residential real estate market at 96.5 percent, while condominiums represent 2.8 percent of the market. The majority of homes in the area ranges from 1000 – 1,400 square feet, 1400 – 1800 square feet and 1800 – 2400 square feet.
