Cumberland County is home to a unique town called Gorham. Unlike most towns Gorham has a number of smaller unincorporated villages and hamlets within its boundaries, including its urban Village center known as Gorham village. Most residents simply call it “The Village”.
Gorham is not only the home of one of the three campuses of the University of Southern Maine, it also has a distinct historical areas within its limits. North Gorham, White rock, West Gorham, South Gorham in Little Falls all have deep connections to mains past. The town itself once classified as a village, was named Gorham town plantation after the famous New England Ranger John Gorham the first.
The area was once a large industrial concern, but over time has increased his population as more residents took root. The town is now an integral part of the Portland-South Portland-Biddeford metro statistical area. Commuters who prefer of the quiet, laconic life prefer living in Gorham while working in the Metro area.
The current 2012 population estimate of the town’s residents was 16,667. Gorham has a total area of 51.29 square miles of land. The towns of Buxton, Standish, Windham, Westbrook, and Scarborough constitutes Gorham’s borders. There are numerous routes in and out of the town; US route 202 in various state routes takes shoppers and commuters to in from the Metro area.
Gorham schools a part of the Gorham school district with three elementary schools, one middle school and high school within its district. Current estimates indicate approximately 2698 students are enrolled for the school year. Gorham is a perfect environment for families who are looking to raise their children in a safe and productive environment.
